A murder case has been filed against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and four former Members of Parliament (MPs) from Madaripur over the death of a mason in the district during anti-quota movement.
The case was filed with Sadar Model police station on Sunday night.
Kamrul Hasan, secretary of Chhatra Dal unit of Madaripur, filed the case.
The case includes 92 named suspects and an additional 500 to 700 unnamed individuals.
AHM Salahuddin, officer-in-charge (OC) of the police station, confirmed the details of the case on Monday morning.
The deceased, Tauhid Sannyamat, was a resident of Suchiarbanga village in Ward no 8 of Mostafapur Union, and he worked as a mason in various areas.
The former MPs named in the case are Shahjahan Khan, AFM Bahauuddin Nasim, Abdus Sobhan Golap, and Noor-e-Alam Chowdhury.
Other defendants include district Awami League President Shahabuddin Ahmed Molla, General Secretary Kajol Krishna Dey, former Chairman of the District Council Munir Chowdhury, Sadar Upazila Chairman and Shahjahan Khan's son Asibur Rahman Khan, former Chairman and Shahjahan Khan’s brother and Bar Association President Obaidur Rahman Khan, former Mayor Khalid Hossain Yad, among 92 others.
According to the case details and police sources, on July 19, in the afternoon, protesters of the quota reform movement were marching from Mostafapur Gol Chattar towards the new bus stand.
When they reached Khagdi bus stand, they were attacked by leaders and activists of the Jubo League and Chhatra League leaders which led to a violent clash.
During the incident, Tauhid and another protester named Roman were severely injured by gunshots.
They were later declared dead by doctors upon reaching the hospital.
On Saturday, Roman's wife Kajol Akhter filed a case with 300 suspects but did not include top leaders such as Sheikh Hasina.
She mentioned that leaders and activists of the Chhatra League and Jubo League were involved in the murder.
In response, Kamrul Hasan filed another case on Sunday night.
Thus, there are now two cases related to the student’s death in Madaripur.
OC AHM Salahuddin stated that the police are investigating the case and trying to arrest the accused individuals.
