Adviser: Power lines in flood-affected areas shut down to prevent accidents

  • 'Will restored once water recedes'
  • 'Unreasonable increases in electricity, fuel prices will no longer occur'
Update : 24 Aug 2024, 06:44 PM

Energy, Power, and Mineral Resources Adviser Fouzul Kabir Khan has said that power lines in flood-affected areas of northeastern Bangladesh have been shut down to prevent accidents, with a damage assessment completed and restoration planned once the water recedes.

He said this during a visit to a 35-megawatt solar power plant established by a private company near the Paturia Ghat in Shibaloy Upazila, Manikganj on Saturday afternoon.

He explained that previously, determining the price of electricity or fuel required consultation with the Energy Regulatory Commission, a third party responsible for making decisions after hearing all sides.

However, a provision was added to the commission's regulations in 2024, allowing the government to increase fuel prices if desired.

The adviser also said that unreasonable increases in electricity and fuel prices will no longer occur.

On the first day of taking responsibility, he stopped the future application of the 2010 law and abolished the provision that allowed the government to raise prices.

Going forward, opportunities for project assignments will be based on competition rather than favouritism.
