  • ‘I am rescuing others but cannot save my own family’
Update : 24 Aug 2024, 03:06 PM

Eleven members of a family in Shikarapur village in Comilla’s Burichang upazila are trapped on their roof, with only one litre of drinking water to survive.

Since Thursday night, they have been enduring this dire situation, according to Nazmul Hossain, a family member and son of Ali Ashraf.

With tears in his voice, Nazmul shared the news and said: "My family has been stuck with just one litre of drinking water for the last three days. My brother Mohammad Liton and ten other family members are stranded. We haven't been able to rescue them despite our desperate efforts."

Their situation is dire as communication has been severed due to the disruption of mobile phone signals.

“I am rescuing others but cannot save my own family. No boats or speedboats are going to Shikarapur because of the strong current. I am trying to reach them. Please pray for us,” he added.

Burichang upazila of Comilla has been completely cut off due to severe flooding, with no electricity or mobile network, making the relief distribution crisis worse.

The situation worsened on Saturday morning as flood-affected residents were left stranded without aid. Children and the elderly are particularly at risk of falling ill.

The disaster began on Thursday night when the Gumti River embankment in the Burburia area of Burichang upazila collapsed. Within a short time, the entire upazila, including local homes, was inundated.
