A case has been filed against eight, including Anisur Rahman, former Superintendent of Police (SP) of Jessore and the current deputy inspector general (DIG) of Rajshahi Division, for their alleged involvement in an extrajudicial killing.
The accused were allegedly involved in the killing of a young man named Abu Sayed from Joypur village in Monirampur Upazila, Jessore.
On Sunday, August 18, Abu Sayed's wife, Parveen Khatun, filed the case in the Monirampur Cognizance Court.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Imran Ahmed ordered the Khulna Divisional DIG of Police to investigate the allegation and submit a report, the plaintiff's lawyer Advocate Shahid Iqbal confirmed the development.
The other seven accused are the former officer-in-charge (OC) of Monirampur Police Station, Molla Khabir Ahmed; Sub-Inspector (SI) Tasnim Ahmed; SI Shaheen; Subrata Singh, son of deceased Durgapada Singh from Durgapur village; Matiur Rahman, son of Jinar Ali; Montaz Ali, son of deceased Nausher Ali Member from Joypur village; and Firoz Ahmed, son of deceased Abdul Mannan from Khordgangra village.
According to the complaint, on the evening of February 17, 2015, Abu Sayed was arrested by the police from the shop of rural doctor Bazlur Rahman in Joypur Bazar.
He was then beaten and taken to the police station in a vehicle.
When family members inquired, they were told that he was detained under the SP's orders.
Later, he was shown as arrested in a pending case, and the OC advised them to contact Awami League leader Momtaz Ali.
Momtaz Ali demanded a large sum of money, and when the family refused, he reportedly said that Abu Sayed was involved with the BNP and was number one on the “crossfire” list.
The complaint further mentions that Abu Sayed was tortured at the police station that night.
In the dead of night, he was taken to a place called Begaritola on the Jessore-Satkhira highway, where he was shot dead.
The next morning, the family was informed of his death. The accused then allegedly conspired to conduct an autopsy and send the body home, the complaint said.
The plaintiff claimed that when they initially tried to file a case regarding Abu Sayed's death in police custody, they were threatened and driven away. Now that the environment is more favorable, she has filed the case in court seeking justice.
Anisur Rahman joined as the SP in Jessore on March 24, 2014, and served until August 19, 2018.
