The BNP has formally requested the United Nations to conduct an international-level investigation into the killings that occurred during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement demanding quota reform.
The letter was submitted to the UN office in the capital’s Gulshan area on Tuesday.
On behalf of the BNP, Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Organizing Secretary Shama Obaid handed over the letter to the UN representative.
Speaking on the occasion, Amir Khasru said: "As per the BNP's decision, we have submitted an application to the United Nations today (Tuesday). Our request is for an impartial and independent international investigation into the killings of Bangladeshi citizens under the current illegal government."
He added: "We have urged the United Nations to uncover the massacres and murders that have marred Bangladesh's political history. To cleanse the nation of this stigma, the atrocities committed on government orders must be exposed both domestically and internationally. No one should ever again dare to kill the people of this country or seize power by force."
The BNP leader emphasized: "We have requested a transparent, impartial, and acceptable investigation. At the same time, we have urged the interim government to allow the United Nations to conduct this inquiry. At this critical juncture, such an investigation is what the nation needs."
When asked about the scope of the investigation, Amir Khasru responded: "This inquiry will focus on genocide. The government-sponsored atrocities require an impartial investigation of international standards. This does not conflict with our country's legal system. We are slowly regaining the rule of law, which was absent earlier."
Khasru also highlighted that the actions taken against the quota movement were condemned globally, with widespread protests against them.
