Debate erupts over erasure of protest graffiti on DU campus

Several writings were found to refer to Hizb ut-Tahrir

Update : 08 Aug 2024, 05:53 PM

After Sheikh Hasina's resignation, the Dhaka University (DU) campus witnessed a surge of agitated wall writings, graffiti, and slogans on every wall.

These markings, which emerged during the protests, symbolized the uprising.

However, some individuals have been seen wiping off these wall writings and graffiti.

Sarder Nadim Mahmud, a co-coordinator of the Anti-Discriminatory Student Movement, said they did not instruct anyone to remove the wall writings and graffiti on the DU campus. “These writings are crucial for documenting student sentiments.”

He urged the students to stop removing or overlapping the wall writings and announced plans to form a team to prevent further removal of these expressions.

Those who were removing the writings explained that they were just removing vulgar and slang words used by agitated students.

It was found that left-wing political leaders and activists are also concerned about the issue.

This correspondent also observed that several wall writings on campus referred to Hizb ut-Tahrir, a terrorist organization banned in Bangladesh. These writings have also been removed by students.

Protester and DU student Ismail Zabiullah Nahid argued that the graffiti, which emerged from student agitation and was marked by the blood of those who died in protests, should be preserved. He argued that if the slang contributed to their victory, they should remain as they represent resistance against the fascist regime.
