Cheering youths seize JS building, loot furniture of Ganabhaban

Videos of the incident went viral on social media

A large number of people entered the Jatiya Sangsad building in the capital after breaking through the main entrance to the building Monday.

Following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government, students were seen dancing and cheering inside the parliament building. Some were also seen smoking while sitting on the chairs of the parliament hall. 

Videos of the incident went viral on social media.

Another group entered Ganabhaban and was observed looting and posing with live animals and furniture at the residence of the country’s prime minister. 

Meanwhile, hours after the vandalism and looting started–some men started a fire outside the Ganabhaban premises. A large crowd was seen cheering around the fire. 

On the other hand, some people were also seen offering prayers at Ganabhaban.

People were seen chanting different slogans and coming out with sacks of grains, baskets, chairs, and air-conditioners among other items from Ganabhaban.

In another video, youths were seen hitting the furniture of a room, presumed to be the former PM’s bedroom, with sticks.

Earlier, after the news of Sheikh Hasina leaving the country spread, scores of people came out on the streets. They attacked and vandalized various establishments. 

Another group of people set fire to the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum on Dhanmondi-32, once the residence of the country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Hours after Sheikh Hasina’s resignation.

Additionally, Awami League president Sheikh Hasina’s office at Dhanmondi-3 was also torched by angry crowds.

By 4pm, protesters had set fire to the Dhaka district unit Awami League office. Shortly after, around 5pm, Sudha Sadan in Dhanmondi, the residence of Wajed Miah, Sheikh Hasina’s late husband, was also set on fire and vandalised.

The Awami League central office on Bangabandhu Avenue was set ablaze shortly after 4pm.

In the face of the one-point demand of the government’s resignation from the platform Students against Discrimination, Sheikh Hasina resigned from the office of prime minister and left Ganabhaban in a military helicopter at around 2:30pm Monday. 

She was accompanied by her sister Sheikh Rehana.
