18 killed in Savar clashes

Over 50, including journalists, injured

At least 18 people were killed in Savar and Dhamrai in clashes between police and protesters on Monday.

Police reportedly fired shots and tear gas, injuring over 50 people, including journalists.

Among the deceased two were identified as Ramzan Ali, 35, Srabon Gazi, 21.

Ramzan was shot at Bypile of Ashulia in Savar. He was later taken to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar where doctors declared him dead.

Srabon was shot dead in Pakiza area.

Md Yusuf, superintendent of the Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar, said: “Two people were brought to the hospital dead. They had bullet wounds in their bodies.”

On Sunday morning, a procession from different areas of Savar and Ashulia gathered at Savar bus stand on Dhaka-Aricha highway and Bypile bus stand on Chandra-Nabinagar highway to participate in the March to Dhaka program to press for the pre-declared demand of the anti-discrimination student movement. 

Later, 200-300 people who took part in the movement attacked Ashulia Police Station. Police fired tear gas shells and pellets at the protesters. Several people were injured and bullet injured during the clash with police.
