Over 95 killed as deadly unrest sweeps Bangladesh

Clashes broke out between protesters and Awami League men across the country

At least 96 people were killed and numerous others injured in a series of deadly clashes that broke out in several parts of the country on Sunday centred on the non-cooperation movement under the banner of Students Against Discriminatio

In Sirajganj, 13 police officers were killed in an attack on Enayetpur police station during the ongoing non-cooperation movement.

According to police sources, some individuals attacked the police station in the afternoon. They entered the station, committed acts of vandalism and set fires. They also beat 13 on-duty police officers to death. However, their identities remain unknown.

Additionally, clashes between protesters and Awami League activists in the afternoon left several dead. Three people were killed in the town, six in Raigonj upazila and one in Shahjadpur. Two of the deceased were Ranjur Rahman, joint secretary of the district Jubo Dal, Suman Sheikh, 28, and Abdul Latif, 42, activists of the Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal.

The police could not provide the identities of the other deceased from the clashes.

In Narsigndi, six people including leaders and activists of the Awami League and its associate bodies were killed, and four protesters were injured by gunfire during a clash at Madhabdi Bus Stand in Narsingdi Sadar upazila, reports UNB.

The deceased were Delwar Hossain (Chardigoldi union parishad chairman), Delwar (local Jubo League leader), Moniruzzaman Bhuiya alias Nati Monir (Sramik League leader), Anisur Rahman Sohel (Sramik League leader) and Nousher (ward 11 commissioner of Madhabdi municipality). The identity of the sixth deceased remains unknown.

In Dhaka, clashes between demonstrators and police, along with Awami League activists, in various areas of the capital left nine people, including students, dead from gunshot wounds. Among them were Anwarul Islam in Uttara, Abdullah Siddiqui, 23, in Jigatala, Ramiz Uddin Roop, 24, a student of Daffodil University, at Kawran Bazar, Tawhidul Islam, 22, at Farmgate, Zahid Uddin, 26, in Gulistan, two in Jatrabari, and another unidentified 25-year-old youth.

In Lakshmipur, eight people were reportedly been killed by gunfire from the home of Upazila Chairman AKM Salah Uddin Tipu, the son of the late Awami League leader Abu Taher. This information was confirmed by Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Md Sohel Rana.

In Bhola, three people were killed during a clash between protestors and members of the Chhatra League and police in the afternoon. Over a hundred people, including police officers, were injured in the clashes that took place from 10am to 2pm. The BNP claimed that two of its activists had been shot dead, while the district Awami League president alleged that a member of the Jubo League had been beaten to death by protesters.

In Joypurhat, protesters attacked, vandalized and set fire to the district Awami League and Chhatra League offices in Joypurhat. To bring the situation under control, police fired tear gas, sound grenades and birdshot. During this time, two people were shot and killed.

In Barisal, the Karim Kuthir and Chaumatha areas of the city turned into a battlefield during clashes between students and members of the Chhatra League and Awami League. An Awami League leader was killed in the clashes. The deceased, Tutul Chowdhury, was the former president of the Awami League's Ward 12 in the city. At least 20 others were injured during the violence.

In Sylhet, five persons died following clashes involving police, Chhatra League members and student protesters in Golapgong.

Among the deceased were Taj Uddin, 35, a betel nut seller, Sunny Ahmed, 23, a student, and Nazmul, 25. The identities of the others who were killed could not be determined.

In Kishoreganj, a clash erupted between protesters and members of the Awami League, including leaders and activists of the Chhatra League, on Station Road, which left three people dead.

The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

In Munshiganj, a three-way clash occurred between protesters, police, and Awami League and Chhatra League activists. During this time, three people, including two construction workers on their way to work, were shot dead. At least 30 people were injured in the clash, including seven who were shot.

In Rangpur, four Awami League men were killed, and over 100 people were injured in a clash between protesters and Awami League activists.

In Pabna, three students were shot dead by a local Awami League leader.

The deceased were identified as Zahid Islam, 19, Mahbubul Hossain, 16 and Fahim, 17.

Additional Superintendent of Police Masud Alam said students were protesting peacefully when Abu Sayeed, organizing secretary of Sadar upazila Awami League, and Shibli Sadik, joint convener of district Jubo League, opened fire on them from behind. This had lead to the casualties, the officer added.

In Bogra, five people were shot and killed during protests. Of the five, the deaths of four were confirmed by Abdul Wadud, deputy director of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, while the death of the fifth person was confirmed by the attending doctor at the private Swadesh Hospital.

In Magura, multiple clashes throughout the day between protesters and others resulted in four people being shot and killed. The deceased included Mehedi Hasan Rabbi, 26, deputy secretary of the district Chhatra Dal, Farhad Hossain, 23, and Suman Sheikh. The name of the fourth person could not be confirmed.

In Comilla, during a clash between students and Chhatra League and Jubo League activists in Debidwar, Comilla, two young men were shot dead. One of the deceased was Abdur Razzak Rubel, 26. The identity of the other victim is unknown.

Additionally, during a clash, a police constable from Eliotganj highway police outpost was reportedly beaten to death.

In Feni, nine people were killed, and more than 50 others, including students, journalists, passersby, and leaders of the Chhatra League and Jubo League, were injured in violent clashes.

The deceased included Ishtiaq Ahmed Shraban,19, Shihab Uddin, 18, Saidul Islam, 20, Shakib, 21 and Shamim, 19. Three other deceased were identified as Sarwar Hossain Masud, Arafat and Biplob, but detailed identification was not available.

In Sherpur, two people were killed in clashes between protesters and local Awami League activists. 

In Cox's Bazar, clashes between protesters and members of the Chhatra League and Jubo League resulted in one death and at least 20 injuries.

Dr Ashiqur Rahman, the resident medical officer of Cox's Bazar District Hospital, confirmed the death but was unable to identify the deceased.

In Habiganj, a between protesters and Awami League activists resulted in the death of a man named Ripon Shil, 28, from gunshot wounds.

Besides, one each died in Gazipur, Savar and Keraniganj.
