Update : 03 Aug 2024, 11:22 PM

Student protesters clashed with police for hours in Bogra municipality on Saturday, ultimately taking control of strategic locations in the town as they forced law enforcement to retreat.

The protests started at 3pm and chases and counter-chases continued intermittently till 6.30pm.

The students were protesting demanding the resignation of the government and justice for the killings of their fellow classmates during the recent quota reform movement.

At 3pm, students started gathering at the Sat Matha intersection of the town.

Guardians and teachers of different educational institutions, including the Government Azizul Haque College, also joined the procession.

At one point a section of the huge procession marched towards the town’s Nababbari area. When crossing the Bogra Zilla School, students repeatedly called the policemen stationed at the school “Fake, Fake,” resulting in a tense standoff that eventually saw police firing tear gas, rubber bullets and sound grenades at the procession.

The students responded with brick chips, and in a short time, different parts of the town turned into a battleground. As police retreated into the Zilla School, the students went past and threw brickbats at an armoured personnel carrier (APC) of police as well as a police plaza.

During this time, they set fire to a police box at Sat Matha and tore down banners of Awami League leaders in nearby markets.

The protesters also called for a non-cooperation movement starting Sunday.

During the protest some miscreants attacked journalists whenever photos were taken, injuring three journalists. They snatched cameras from the journalists and deleted the photos/videos.

The rampage caused all shops in the city to shut down, spreading panic throughout the city.
