Says an investigation is needed to know if the killing was aimed at fueling the protests

Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif said the police officer who shot Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) student Abu Sayeed is an Islami Chhatra Shibir cadre, the student wing of Jamaat.

The incident of killing Abu Sayeed needed to be investigated to know if it was a planned murder to fuel the movement or not, he said at a discussion at the National Press Club on Monday afternoon.

An organization named Gourob 71 arranged this program where Whip of the Parliament Sanjida Khanam, National University Vice Chancellor Mashiur Rahman, Relief and Social Welfare Affairs Secretary of Bangladesh Awami League Aminul Islam Amin, General Secretary of National Press Club Farida Yasmin and others spoke.

“Student Abu Sayeed was killed on July 16, during the quota reform protest near his university campus. He died soon after receiving a gunshot. It has been confirmed that the policeman who shot Abu Sayeed is a member of Islami Chhatra Shibir. Whether it was a well-planned conspiracy aimed at fueling the protest is also a matter of investigation,” Hanif said.

Several sources of police said an officer named Yunus Ali fired at Abu Sayeed during a protest on July 16 without authorization from higher officials in Rangpur.

Mahbubul Alam Hanif also claimed there was a failure of intelligence agencies to tackle this movement.

After the government filed an appeal on June 9, the court went on vacation. During this time, the BNP restructured the partial committees of Dhaka Metropolitan North and South and reshuffled its youth wing, Juba Dal. Their aim was to undermine the government during the quota reform movement. However, the intelligence agencies failed to properly assess the situation.

He also mentioned that the BNP and Jamaat exploited the sentiment of general students, redirecting the quota reform movement into an anti-government protest to further their own political agendas.
