The road from Aminbazar to Gabtoli has been blocked following a chase and counter-chase involving quota reform protesters, members of the Chhatra League and the police.
After police fired tear gas shells, the students from different private universities and colleges, including Dhaka Residential Model College and Notre Dame College, moved away from the main road and took positions in different alleys in the area on Thursday.
Students, on condition of anonymity, told this correspondent that they had been attacked by people armed with sharp weapons.
A couple of women said they had accompanied their children there as they had wanted to join the protest.
Meanwhile, a woman going to her office also joined the protest.
There were reports of several injuries.
Doctors at Ibn Sina Specialized Hospital in Dhanmondi two students had received treatment and would leave the hospital soon.
The protesters on Wednesday declared a complete shutdown, demanding the end of what they called police brutality against their peaceful student movement, justice for those killed during demonstrations, the assurance of a violence-free campus and a rational reform of the quota system.
They announced that during this shutdown, only emergency services, including hospitals and media, would remain operational.
