After a four-hour-long blockade at Shapla Chattar, students advocating for quota reform vacated the area, allowing traffic to return to normal.
Starting at noon, students of Notre Dame College, Ideal College, Government Science College, Dhaka Imperial College, University of Asia Pacific, Sabujbagh Government College, and several other institutions joined the protest.
By 4pm, the protesters left the area, bringing relief to commuters and restoring the flow of traffic.
The demonstration was organized in response to recent attacks on students at Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, and other institutions across the country.
The students demanded justice for the assaults carried out by the Chhatra League.
Despite causing some inconvenience to the public, the protesters eventually cleared the road.
A police officer on duty said: “The students had blocked the road for a long time, disrupting traffic. Later, upon our request, they vacated the road. No untoward incidents occurred during the protest,” claimed the officer.
Due to the road blockade by the students, severe traffic congestion was created in Motijheel and its surrounding areas.
Many people were seen getting out of their vehicles and walking to their destinations.
A pedestrian named Motasim Billah said: “The government and its student organization have behaved inhumanely towards the students. The government should address their demands and calm the situation. For the past week, we, the general public, have been suffering, yet the government has paid no attention.”
