Report: Rajshahi tops in marriage rate, Sylhet ranks last

In Bangladesh, the Rajshahi division boasts the highest marriage rate, with 68.97% of people above 10 years of age currently married. 

On the other hand, the Sylhet division has the lowest marriage rate at 61.67%. 

Region-wise, marriage rates vary significantly, with Rajshahi leading with 68.97%, followed closely by Khulna at 68.85%, while Sylhet reports the lowest rate at 55.59%.

Overall, 65.26% of individuals aged 10 and above are married, with 28.65% unmarried, and the rest widowed or divorced. 

Women show a higher prevalence of marriage, with 67.47% married compared to 63.02% of men in the same age group.

The data is found from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) analysis of marital status from the Population and Housing Census 2022. 

Additional divisional marriage rates include 66.66% in Barisal, 65.63% in Dhaka, 65.74% in Mymensingh, and 67.65% in Sylhet.

Furthermore, 5.31% of people in the country are widows or widowers. Of them, 0.96% are male and 9.51% are female. 

The widow or widower rate is highest in the Rangpur division at 5.84%, while the lowest is in the Dhaka division at 4.66%. 

The rates are 5.54% in the Barisal division, 5.14% in the Chittagong division, 5.62% in the Khulna division, 5.76% in the Mymensingh division, 5.66% in the Rajshahi division, and 5.81% in the Sylhet division.

Meanwhile, the rate of marital separation in the country is 0.37%. 

The percentage of women in marital separation is higher at 0.51%, compared to 0.22% for men. 

The highest rate of marital separation is in the Khulna division at 0.46%, and the lowest in the Barisal division at 0.31%. 

The rates of marital separation are 0.37% in the Dhaka and Rajshahi divisions, 0.32% in the Chittagong division, 0.35% in the Rangpur and Mymensingh divisions, and 0.39% in the Sylhet division.

Advocate Nur Uddin, a lawyer, believes that the information about marital relations in the BBS report does not provide a complete picture. 

He pointed out that there is still a trend in rural areas to divorce without registering. Additionally, many people do not register their marriages in the capital or various cities.

Despite several attempts, it was not possible to contact Dildar Hossain, project director of the BBS.
