Students protesting for the abolition of quotas have broken through police barricades and taken position at Shahbagh.
During this time, some students were seen celebrating on top of armored police vehicles.
Despite such behavior from the students, the police have shown patience, commented Dr Kh Mahid Uddin, Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
Earlier in the day, Mahid Uddin said any further road blockades would be dealt with according to the law.
“The directives from the top court are in favour of the students. Therefore, if there is no justification for the protests, they should not proceed [with their upcoming protests]. We urge the students not to continue with the protests. If they do not comply with the directives and continue protesting, it will be considered an offence,” he added.
However, at 5pm, the protesters took position at the Shahbagh intersection. Initially, the police tried to stop them but later stepped aside.
As of 7:20pm, the students were still blocking Shahbagh intersection and continuing their protest with various slogans.
Due to the students' blockade, all traffic in and around Shahbagh remains completely halted.
