State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid on Thursday assured uninterrupted gas supply in Bangladesh by 2027.
"We have strategized to eliminate the gas crisis in the country by 2027. To achieve this, we have developed several plans, including offering a gas pipeline to China,” he said at a press conference on Thursday.
Meanwhile, he added that the current problem in gas supply will be resolved by July 15 or 16. “It is a difficult task to keep uninterrupted power and energy in storms in our riverine country. We are trying.”
The state minister added that the cost of electricity from gas and coal-fired power plants has been unstable.
Previously, gas that cost $7 per unit has risen to $67 per unit, resulting in Petrobangla spending over Tk35,000 crore in expenses.
Nasrul Hamid further said that although the distribution companies are incurring losses, the price of electricity at the consumer level is not increasing for the time being.
The IMF has given the condition of increasing the price of electricity four times a year. In view of this, the price has been increased twice and it is a regular adjustment, he added.
“When we are asked to increase the price again, we will increase the price. However, the price of electricity is not increasing at the consumer level,” the state minister added.
