More than 700 tourists have been stranded in Rangamati's Sajek as the Baghaichari-Baghaihat road was submerged by a surge of water from upstream on Tuesday morning.
Consequently, 125 vehicles carrying the tourists are stuck in Sajek, according to Motijoy Tripura, joint general secretary of the Cottage Owners Association.
He said that all vehicles that arrived on Monday are now forced to stay in Sajek as the rising water levels make it impossible for them to travel.
Rangamati's Baghaichari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shirin Akter said the heavy rains in Baghaichhari have inundated low-lying areas.
About 2,000 families’ homes are now underwater. Although 55 shelter centres have been opened in the upazila, no one has yet sought refuge in them.
