  • ‘Bangladesh eliminates militants before they launch operations’

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman said Bangladesh is known as a role model in eliminating militancy.

He said militancy is a global problem and Bangladesh is no exception. However, Bangladesh is in a very good position due to the strong activities and foresight of the police, RAB, Anti-Terrorism Unit, and all other units in combating militancy, he added.

He made the comments after paying tribute to the victims of the Holey Artisan militant attack in Gulshan on Monday.

"In other countries of the world, we see that they conduct operations after militant attacks. Bangladesh is the only example where we have been able to eliminate the militants through various intelligence information before they could launch their operations,” he added.

Habibur Rahman said people from all sections of the society and media should come forward alongside the law enforcement agencies to curb militancy.

The eighth anniversary of the Holey Artisan Bakery attack, the deadliest night of terror in the country’s history that left 22 people dead, is being commemorated on Monday.

Diplomats including Ambassador of Italy Antonio Alessandro are scheduled to pay tribute to the victims of the attack on July 1, 2016, at Holey Artisan Bakery by placing wreaths of flowers.

They are also to pay tribute to the victims of the attack at diplomatic police headquarters.

On the night of July 1, 2016, five armed militants stormed the O Kitchen restaurant and Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan and killed 22 people, including 17 foreigners and two police officers.

The carnage ended when a team of army commandos stormed the restaurant and shot the five attackers dead the next morning.
