Jagannath University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Sadeka Halim said children must be encouraged to plant trees to maintain environmental balance.
“Carbon emissions must be reduced,” she said on Wednesday during a rally.
Prof Dr Sadeka Halim also said: “The prime minister has undertaken many groundbreaking initiatives for this purpose. However, the practice of planting trees at the local level has not yet developed. Children must be encouraged to plant trees.”
The vice-chancellor said: "After independence, our tree cover was about 25%, which has now decreased to 9%. We need to incorporate the importance of trees into the curriculum from the school level and encourage children by making them understand their significance."
Teachers and students from the Department of Geography and Environment participated at the rally.
After the rally, students planted saplings in the university's Science Building courtyard.
