In a remarkable display of talent and determination, the Bangladesh Girls' Mathematics Team secured one Bronze medal and three Honorable Mentions at the 13th European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) 2024.

This prestigious event, one of the most significant international competitions for pre-university girls, took place in Tskaltubo, Georgia, from April 11 to 17.

With 212 outstanding young women from 55 countries attending this year, the event highlighted its global reach and competitive spirit.

Nujhat Ahmed Disha from Viqarunnisa Noon School and College earned the prestigious Bronze medal.

Her teammates—Afsana Akter from Holy Cross College, Saniva Rakib Soha of Mirpur Cantonment Public School and College, and Monamy Zaman, also from Viqarunnisa Noon School and College—each received Honorable Mentions.

Together, these achievements have elevated Bangladesh's reputation in the global mathematics community.

The leadership duo, Atonu Roy Chowdhury and deputy Ipshita Bonhi Upoma, played an instrumental role in steering the team to success.

Their effective guidance was especially crucial this year as the competition emphasized number theory and algebra, areas where the team showed significant improvement.

Despite initial visa complications, the team's determination, combined with the strategic support coach Dr Mahbub Majumdar and the tireless efforts of Bangladesh Girls' Mathematics Foundation Chairperson Dr Sadia Hamid Kazi, ensured their participation and success.

Sadia Hamid Kazi expressed her pride in the girls' achievement, emphasizing that their success is a testament to the power of determination and continuous effort.

Their efforts were backed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh and generous sponsorship from prominent companies Abdul Monem Ltd and RoseLeemon Credit Reports and Collections Ltd, enabling the team to showcase their skills on this prestigious platform.

Dr Kazi expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Dr Syed Muntasir Mamun, chief innovation officer and Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bangladesh, AML Ltd's CEO and Managing Director ASM Mainuddin Monem and RoseLeemon Credit Reports and Collection Ltd's Managing Director AOZ Ryan for their enthusiastic and generous support.

She praised the team for their resilience and dedication, a sentiment echoed by professors Yasmeen Haq and Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, who expressed immense pride in the achievements of these young women.

Prof Iqbal highlighted the significance of their international presence and their enthusiasm for mathematics.

Reflecting on the competition, Ipshita Bonhi Upoma, founder of Gonitkonya-Bangladesh Girls’ Mathematics Foundation and deputy leader of the 2024 team, praised the unique challenges of this year's questions and the team’s significant improvements in mathematical capabilities.

"The enthusiasm and joy our girls displayed throughout the event are achievements in their own right," she remarked.

The road to EGMO began with the inaugural Bangladesh National Girls’ Mathematics Olympiad in September 2023, followed by a series of training camps and tests that culminated in the selection of the final team.

This consistent performance over the years showcases Bangladesh's dedication to nurturing and advancing girls’ talent in mathematics, inspiring the next generation of female mathematicians.

Since beginning their participation in 2021, Bangladesh has now accumulated two silver medals, seven bronze medals, and five honorable mentions over the past four years, demonstrating a remarkable track record of success at the EGMO.

These achievements not only highlight individual brilliance but also underscore the country's commitment to fostering excellence in mathematics among young women.

The Gonitkonya-Bangladesh Girls' Mathematics Foundation (BGMF) is committed to continuing its mission to cultivate and empower girls' proficiency in mathematics, drawing motivation from their ongoing success at international competitions like EGMO.

This triumph is a testament to the potential and intellectual might of Bangladesh's young mathematicians.
