Update : 25 Mar 2024, 12:16 PM

A fire that had broken out at a factory owned by TK Group in Gajaria upazila of Munshiganj on Sunday afternoon was brought under control after 14 hours.

Twelve firefighting units brought the fire under control at around 3am.

However, the board and board-making equipment inside the factory were still burning.

The factory is located on the banks of the Meghna River.

Gazaria Fire Station Officer Rifat Mallik said: “Six units of the fire service are still working there. More than 50 firefighters are still on the spot. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.”

Seven people – an Ansar member and six factory workers – were injured while trying to douse the blaze. They were later admitted to Gajaria Upazila Health Complex.

The district administration formed a five-member probe committee headed by Additional District Commissioner Masudur Rahman to look into the incident.

Rifat Mallik said:  "The fire is still burning as there are huge piles of superboards made of wood dust and jute sticks and board-making equipment in the factory. The fire service has been able to contain the fire to part of a shed. The fire is unlikely to spread. Goods in the form of piles inside the godown are still burning now."

This factory previously caught fire in 2013, and it took five days to extinguish that fire fully.

Workers at the factory noticed the fire at around 1pm on Sunday, which quickly spread and became severe. Three tugs anchored for unloading goods at the warehouse also caught fire.
