Despite suicides taking place for centuries in society, researchers say that the tendency and executions of self-killings have intensified these days.

They find people’s isolation – be it from family or society – to be the main reason for suicides.

Sociologists say that humans invented single families to fulfill their own necessities in respective societies.

But if they feel isolated and lonely, separate and proper research on their issues needs to be done in respective societies.

It will make it easier to figure out the ways to stop suicides.

According to the World Health Organization, a staggering 800,000 people commit suicide annually.

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in a study in 2014 said on average 28 people kill themselves in the country every day.

Sleeping pill overdose, falling of from a high place or even jumping on a rail track are common methods of suicide.

Psychiatrist Md SM Atiqur Rahman emphasized the need for mass awareness over depression.

“We’re to go through different types of pressures in our families and societies. A person and his near ones must understand when that person gets frustrated and ultimately, becomes depressed,” he said.

“An awareness program can ease the understanding,” said Atiqur, adding that long-term plans can massively check depression, thus, reducing suicides to a great extent.

Sociologist Neehal Karim, stating that social instabilities affect individuals, said: “Out of our own interest, we’ve turned to single families by splitting extended families.

“But it has become tough to handle our daily life in a single family. Members of a single or small family are failing to learn where and when to compromise, or face hardship,” Nehal said.

They, he said, are also feeling isolated despite being in a society.

“When things do not happen as expected, a person becomes frustrated. When the frustration turns into depression, he or she can’t even deal with that,” the sociologist added.

“All we need now is to study society-wise solutions to the issues. The solutions may vary from one society to another,” he said.

Taking on the role of a family, Mekhala Sarkar, head of the Department of Psychotherapy, Clinical Psychology and Psychiatric Social Work at NIMH, said that parents have the main role to play in their children’s future.

“Parents should teach their children how to face and get rid of problems. Children always follow their parents or guardians, especially their lifestyle and ideologies,” she said.

“Children have to be taught how to survive in harmony. They should be taught whom and when to report their hurt feelings. These will grow confidence in them and eventually, help reduce suicides.
