Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have recovered two more unexploded mortar shells, reportedly fired from Myanmar, along the Tumbru border in Naikhongchhari upazila of Bandarban.
The two mortar shells were recovered on Saturday morning.
A local of the area, Razia, said she found some children playing with the mortar shells on a field and informed the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) of the matter.
BGB members said they have placed barricades on the road for safety.
Meanwhile, since Saturday morning, heavy gunfire has been heard intermittently on the Myanmar side of Tumbru and Teknaf in Bandarban along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border.
The BGB members said they were on high alert so that no new infiltration could take place through the border.
The sound of heavy gunfire in Bandarban's Uttarpara and Teknaf’s Whykong union on Saturday morning created panic among the locals.
BGB Cox's Bazar Battalion Director (Operations) Lieutenant Colonel Hafizur Rahman said: "The firing on the border has decreased compared to the past. We are on the highest alert along the border to prevent infiltration.”
People living along the border said they heard heavy firing at the Tumbru border since early morning on Saturday.
Apart from this, heavy gunfire was heard inside Myanmar, on the other side of the Naf River.
A resident of Whykong, Saiful, said: "Heavy firing was heard on the Myanmar border from dawn to 8am. At that time, some people tried to enter from the other side. But our BGB members were in a cautious position. After seeing them, they went back.”
In this regard, Teknaf Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Md Mohiuddin Ahmed said: "People are trying to infiltrate through different borders. But we are not allowing anyone new to enter Bangladesh.”
The Arakan Army (AA) declared the capture of the final Myanmar junta stronghold in the historic city of Mrauk U, situated in the Rakhine State.
The rebel army also reported sinking three naval landing crafts during a counteroffensive and ongoing clashes.
The AA's assertion includes damage to at least seven other naval vessels within Rakhine State's rivers over the past month. According to the rebel group, Myanmar Police Battalion 31 in Mrauk U was seized on Thursday, signifying the complete control of the township.
