The Indian Border Security Force (BSF) has obstructed the work on a part of the under-construction truck terminal at the Benapole land port, bringing an allegation of construction of structures within 150 yards of the border.
Construction has been suspended for 11 consecutive days.
The issue was brought to the attention of the top government but there was no solution.
Due to the construction work remaining suspended, there is doubt whether the construction will be completed on time.
Along with this, a tense situation is prevailing among the people living on the border.
Those concerned authorities said that diplomatic talks between the two countries have become necessary to solve this problem as soon as possible.
“If not, unexpected incidents may happen at the border at any time,” said the authorities.
When asked about this, Bangladesh Land Port Authority Chairman (Joint Secretary) Zillur Rahman Chowdhury admitted the fact that the work remains suspended.
"The issue will be resolved through mutual discussions between the two countries,” he said.
Benapole Land Port Director Rezaul Karim said in this regard: "The construction of the truck terminal is scheduled to be completed in June this year. Once this work is completed, the trucks that enter the port from India every day will be able to stop at the terminal. By doing this, there will be no more delays and traffic jams in the release of goods at the port.”
Port officials will be able to release goods from cargo trucks easily and swiftly. But the work of the truck terminal under construction on 16 acres of border land remains suspended due to BSF's obstruction.
He said that the rest of the work of the terminal will be started very soon through the mutual discussion of land port authorities of BGB and BSF.
Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed Hasan Jamil, commanding officer of Jessore-49 BGB, said: "We have come to know about the interruption by BSF. We have conveyed the matter to our higher authorities.”
“Through discussions with the port authority and BSF, a fruitful solution will be found and the construction of the terminal will begin very soon”, said the official.
