The sounds of mortar shells and gunfire are being heard intermittently from across Myanmar at the Teknaf border in Cox's Bazar. The area falls between Laldia between Damdamia and Jadimora villages in Hnila Union Parishad.
People living in the border area are terrified.
Mohammad Ali, a member of Ward No 9 of Hnila Union Parishad confirmed the information and said sounds were heard between 3:00am to 8:30am on Wednesday.
The sound of gunshots and mortar shells was heard a few days earlier as well. But the duration of the firing was longer this time, he added.
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Teknaf-2 Battalion Captain Lt Col Mohiuddin Ahmed said that Myanmar's internal crisis is currently spreading along the border areas. There is a conflict between the government forces and the Arakan Army. BGB is maintaining a strict position on the Teknaf border. It is cautious to prevent any new Rohingya infiltration, he added.
Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Adnan Chowdhury said that the higher authorities are aware of the situation. Residents in the border areas have been asked to be vigilant.
