Update : 30 Jan 2024, 11:50 PM

Ganatantra Mancha’s leaders on Tuesday said that the people of Bangladesh will not allow the government elected through a “dummy election” to stay in power.

The leaders and activists said the government thinks they will stay in power for the next five years. After that, they will talk about elections again.

However, the people of Bangladesh will not let them stay in power for five years. They said this during a protest march in front of the National Press Club, demanding a new election under a caretaker government by cancelling the elections, on Tuesday.

Ganosamhati Andolan Chief Coordinator Zonayed Saki said: “People's voting rights were snatched on January 7. A party held elections among themselves, which can not be called voting.”

He said: “People are questioning whether this party will exist once it steps down from power. As long as they are in power with this dummy election and parliament, they will destroy our lives.”

Biplobi Workers Party General Secretary Saiful Haque said: “The government is making a new law to send the political opposition parties, including BNP, to jail quickly in the name of trial. This government is now trying to survive by adopting the judicial system. This way they will not survive for long."

He further said: “All the opposition parties of the country have again come to the streets with the support of millions of people of the country. The accumulated anger of the people on this street can appear in the form of a mass movement. We will stay on the streets until we win this fight.”

Nagarik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna said: "This government will not be able to stay in power for five years, no matter how much it boasts. No matter how much you (the government) think, you will run with power and dominance, but you will not be able to run the government."
