At least 10 people were injured in a clash between supporters of independent candidate (Eagle symbol) former state minister Dr Murad Hasan and Awami League candidate Engineer Mahbubur Rahman Helal in Sarishabari, Jamalpur.
The incident took place at 6:30pm on Thursday.
The 10 injured were admitted to Sarishabari Upazila Health Complex and are undergoing treatment.
According to locals, an Awami League procession went to the bus stand area to promote the election.
Later, under the leadership of Manjurul Islam Bidyut, the younger brother of Awami League candidate Engineer Mahbubur Rahman Helal, the Boat symbol’s procession approached the election camp of independent candidate Murad Hasan and the activists started dancing to Awami League’s slogans.
Subsequently, they attacked the supporters of the independent candidate.
Following the clash, around a hundred women and Murad's supporters blocked the road in the bus stand area for around 40 minutes, demanding justice.
At 9:30pm, Councilor Sakhawatul Alam Mukul filed a complaint at Sarishabari police station, with Manjurul Islam Bidyut as the main defendant.
Mukul mentioned in the complaint: "Upon seeing the Boat procession on the road in front of our election camp, I moved our workers inside and stood next to the tea shop. At that time, Manjurul Islam Bidyut, Mirzal, Nurul, Zahurul, the brother of the Boat candidate, dragged me to the street, attacked and injured me, and vandalized the office. Several of my workers were injured while trying to rescue me. I seek justice and strongly condemn and protest this incident."
Injured leader, Sanjida, said: "We were ambushed by supporters of Boat candidate. We demand justice."
Meanwhile, Boat candidate Mahbubur Rahman Helal could not be reached for comments.
Sarishabari police station Officer-in-charge (OC) Mushfiqur Rahman mentioned that upon receiving the news, he immediately went to the spot, removed the two parties, and brought the situation under control.
Legal action will be taken if a written complaint is received regarding the incident.
