A group of miscreants opened fire on a tourist car in Shukna Chari area on the way to Sajek in Rangamati amid a blockade on Monday morning.

Baghaichari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shirin Akhter confirmed the matter.

Locals suspect that the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) may have carried out the incident. The group was observing a daylong blockade program in Khagrachhari, protesting the killing of its four leaders.

On December 11, four UPDF leaders were shot dead by miscreants in Panchari Upazila of Khagrachhari.

The UNO said: “Miscreants opened fire on the tourist car when it reached the Shukna Chari area on the way to Sajek Union in the morning. However, no one was injured in the incident. Security forces rescued the tourists and brought them to a safe place.

“The miscreants fired two or three rounds of bullets at the car.”

Dighinala police station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Nurul Haque said: “The incident occurred in the border area of Rangamati and Dighinala. Upon receiving information, the army and police rushed to the spot, rescued the vehicles, and took them to the army's Baghaihat zone. Three cars sustained slight damage. Law enforcers will escort the vehicles to their destination.”

In support of the blockade, the UPDF activists picketed the streets by burning tyres in various parts of the town and blocking the movement of public transport. Night coaches, tourists, and goods-laden vehicles from Dhaka entered Khagrachhari town around 9am.
