A readymade garment (RMG) worker, who sustained bullet injuries during a clash between workers and police in the Jarun area of Konabari in Gazipur on Wednesday, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
The deceased, Jalal Uddin, 40, son of Chand Mia of Bamhati under Kendua in Netrokona, was a sewing supervisor at a garment factory of Islam Group in Jarun area.
Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH police outpost said that injured RMG worker Jalal died at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital at around 12:30am on Sunday.
He said that the body was in the Dhaka Medical College morgue and that they informed the matter to the concerned police station.
On November 8, the clash took place when workers of three factories of Islam Group in the Jarun area began a demonstration demanding their wage hike. Later, police tried to disperse them from the roads.
To bring the situation under control, police fired tear gas and rubber bullets. Several workers were injured in the clash.
Two of the injured workers -- Anjuara Khatun, 24, and Jalal Uddin, 42, were rushed to DMCH in critical condition and Anjuara was declared dead at the hospital later on the day.
Over the last two weeks, workers demonstrating for a minimum wage of Tk23,000 clashed with law enforcers in Gazipur, Savar, and the capital's Mirpur.
On October 30, garment worker Rasel Howlader, 26, died after Gazipur Industrial Police personnel allegedly shot him at close range, and on November 8, Anjuara Khatun, 28, a sewing machine operator of Islam Garments in Gazipur, died of gunshot injuries after police opened fire on protesters.
