The Editors' Council strongly condemns and expresses concern over the security of journalists.
In a statement signed by Mahfuz Anam and Dewan Hanif Mahmud, the Editor’s Council said journalists report various programs called by political parties as part of their profession and present them to the public.
“But it is very worrying that they are attacked or their security is disrupted when they are performing their duties. Yesterday (Saturday), around 25 journalists were injured or attacked in different parts of the capital while performing their professional duties, which is highly condemnable and worrying,” reads the statement issued on Sunday.
The Editors' Council requested all political parties and law enforces to ensure the safety of journalists.
A number of journalists, including Dhaka Tribune photojournalist Mahmud Hossain Opu, have been attacked by the BNP activists during their clash with police in the capital’s Kakrail area.
Raju Hamid, publicity and publications secretary of Dhaka Union of Journalists, in a Facebook post, said journalists of Ittefaq, Somoy TV, Jamuna TV and Kalbela came under attack while discharging their duties.
He told Dhaka Tribune that they were collecting the names of the journalists who were injured during the clash.
