A long traffic jam has been created in Gabtoli, one of the key points to enter Dhaka, as searching is underway in police checkposts of every entrance ahead of rallies planned by rival political parties, the ruling Awami League, opposition BNP, Jamaat, and other groups on Saturday.
Passengers of public transport, private cars, trucks, and pickups coming from different destinations are being stopped and interrogated at the entrance which is the main reason behind the traffic congestion.
Commuters are suffering immensely due to heavy traffic.
Due to the police check post in the Gabtoli area, a long tailback has been created till Aminbazar, covering about two-kilometre area.
Many commuters are forced to get out of their vehicles and enter the capital on foot.
Inspector (Investigation) Jamal Hossain of Darussalam police station said: "We are checking. There is a little traffic jam. Police are working to keep the traffic moving.”
Thousands of law enforcers from police, RAB and other agencies have been deployed in the capital city ahead of the rallies on Saturday.
Special check posts have been set up alongside police patrolling to prevent any untoward incident.
Besides, the security will be further beefed up from the evening.
The main opposition BNP has vowed to go ahead with its rally in front of the party’s Naya Paltan office.
The ruling Awami League will hold a counter-rally at the south gate of Baitul Mukurram Mosque in the afternoon coinciding with the BNP rally. Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh has planned its rally at Shapla Chattor.
