Lalmai UNO admits threatening imam, expresses regret

Lalmai UNO Md Forkan Elahi Anupam has expressed his regrets to Imam Maulana Abul Bashar for threatening to fire him and drown him in water after the imam asked the public servant to sit in a queue during Friday prayers. 

The two buried the hatchet on Sunday evening through the mediation of Comilla Deputy Commissioner Mehmed Mushfiqur Rahman.

Central leaders of Shane Sahaba Khatib Council and the district imam association were present in the meeting at the deputy commissioner's office.

Comilla Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Pankaj Barua confirmed the matter.

He mentioned that a group attempted to exploit a minor issue for their personal gain. The district administration intervened, calling both parties to a meeting to resolve the matter. 

Pankaj said he will soon visit the mosque and provide financial donations as a gesture of goodwill.

Shane Sahaba Khatib Council Chairman Mufti Shamim Majumdar expressed gratitude to the deputy commissioner for his proactive approach to resolving the issue. He also thanked the media for providing unbiased coverage.

Regarding the imam's job status, Mufti Shamim stated that the deputy commissioner inquired about it, and there was no dismissal as claimed earlier.

News surfaced that UNO Md Forkan Elahi Anupam had allegedly fired the imam who had asked the public servant to move a little to maintain queues during Jummah prayers at Lalmai Masjid in Comilla.

The incident took place at Bhatra Kachari Central Jame Masjid near the Perul union land office of the upazila on Friday.

The reported sacking led to widespread criticism after it circulated on social media.
