  • Rest admitted in critical condition
Update : 12 Oct 2023, 05:40 PM

Mansura Begum, 22, wife of CNG driver Md Mamun from Bandardia village in Narsingdi's Shibpur upazila, gave birth to quintuplets at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) at 10am on Thursday.

She was admitted on the day to the gynaecology department of DMCH at 8am with labour pains.

However, Indoor Medical Officer Sabiha Sultana said that a newborn girl died sometime after birth.

The remaining four infants – one boy and three girls – were delivered normally and are currently receiving care in the neonatal unit.

Sabiha said that their condition is critical due to their prematurity and low birth weight; they were born at just 26 weeks. The infants are being closely monitored in incubators, and comprehensive treatment efforts are ongoing.

The mother, Mansura Begum, remains admitted alongside her newborns.

Expressing a mix of happiness and concern, the grandmother of the newborns, Karima Begum, shared her sentiments. "I married off my son two years ago. They had no children before, and this is the first time. We are both happy and distressed," she said.

She added that due to their fragile condition, the babies have not been able to be held, while one of them died shortly after birth.
