Flood likely to hit northern districts as Teesta dam damaged in Sikkim

The river bank areas of Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Kurigram, and Gaibandha, are likely to experience flash floods due to heavy onrush and damage of ChungThang dam of Teesta River in the upstream North Sikkim in India.

The water level of Teesta River has been increasing fast due to damage of the dam. 

According to the 

Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC), the river bank areas of the districts may be inundated as a fresh flood may hit the Teesta basin by Thursday.

This information was given in the report issued by Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) of Kurigram on Wednesday morning. 

According to the Central Water Commission of India, the water level of Teesta at India's Ghazaldoba point has increased by about 285cm since midnight. 

Water level increased at Domuhuni point by about 82cm on Wednesday morning, which is also on rise. 

The Teesta River may cross the danger level at Dalia points by Wednesday evening and at Kawnia points by Thursday morning due to heavy onrush and damage of the dam. 

The Indian Met Office forecasted heavy downpours in Sikkim in the next 48 hours. For this, the Teesta flood situation will continue 

Abdullah Al Mamun, executive engineer of BWDB Kurigram, said: "There is a fear of short-term flooding in the Teesta basin. Low-lying areas may be inundated.”
