“Hello, is this police control? I entered a shop to steal some items, and now I have been caught. The locals are about to lynch me; please arrest me… please send some police officers to Khanka Road and save me.”
This is what Hridoy, 25, said after calling the national emergency service 999 asking for help after getting caught during a theft early on Tuesday.
The incident took place around 4:15am near the passport office on Khanka Road under Kadamtali police station’s jurisdiction in Dhaka.
National Emergency Service 999 Police Inspector (Public Relations) Anwar Sattar confirmed it saying that after hearing Hridoy’s plea, they immediately notified Kadamtali police, and a team of policemen swiftly reached the scene.
“By then, the locals had already begun beating Hridoy,” he said.
Police rescued Hridoy and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for first aid, the inspector said.
He was later taken to the police station, he added.
A case has been filed against Hridoy and has been presented in court, said Anwar Sattar.
