A patient died after jumping from the eighth floor of the new building at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) early Friday.

The deceased was identified as Riya Begum, a resident of Bhadurdangi village in Pabna Sadar upazila.

She was rushed to the hospital's emergency department after the incident, where the on-duty doctor declared her dead.

Riya's father, Latif Mallik, said she had been admitted to Ward 802 of the hospital's Medicine Department three days earlier.

"Early in the morning, relatives of another patient alerted me that my daughter was about to jump from the balcony. I ran towards her, but before I could reach her, she jumped. Everyone tried to stop her, but she did not listen," he said.

According to Latif, Riya landed on the roof of a parked private car before being taken to the emergency department.

He said Riya had married a Bangladeshi expatriate living in Singapore around four and a half years ago. Her husband returned to Singapore about two years ago after visiting Bangladesh.

Latif also said Riya had been suffering from mental health problems, which had worsened over the past 10 days.

Inspector Md Faruk of the DMCH police outpost said the body had been kept at the hospital morgue and Shahbagh police station had been informed.
