Director General of National Consumer Protection Directorate AHM Shafiquzzaman has highlighted the artificial scarcity and price hike of saline due to the increasing number of dengue patients across the country.

He emphasized that companies are capable of producing saline round the clock, and there should be no cause for a crisis. However, certain individuals are responsible for disrupting the supply chain.

These remarks were made during a discussion meeting held at the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection's meeting room in Kawran Bazar in the capital on Wednesday.

The meeting aimed to bring together manufacturing companies, wholesalers, retailers, and relevant stakeholders to address the issue and ensure the availability of saline at reasonable prices.

Director General AHM Shafiquzzaman stated: "Tomorrow (Thursday), we will launch nationwide operations. If any irregularities are detected, we will take appropriate actions. Saline must not be sold above the maximum retail price indicated on the packaging."

"If saline is sold at an inflated price, legal action will be taken," he added.

The director general emphasized the importance of adhering to the price specified on saline packaging, saying: "The maximum retail price is clearly marked on the saline packaging. It cannot be sold for even a single additional taka."

He further explained: "Pharmaceutical companies are the source of saline production. Saline is no longer distributed via vans; it is supplied to pharmacies through a regulated distribution chain. The price must be strictly observed. As long as there is stock, it should be sold at the specified price. Saline's supply may be limited, but demand is high; nonetheless, the price must remain consistent. If consumers are deceived or extorted, it is our responsibility to take legal action against the offenders."

AHM Shafiquzzaman also mentioned a recent operation in Chittagong where two shops were raided, resulting in many individuals fleeing. He stressed that pharmacies should not close in response to the campaign, as there is a critical need for saline. "Many claim that saline is available in cartons inside the pharmacies," he added.

The meeting brought together officials from the health department, drug administration, manufacturing companies, wholesalers, retailers, and other stakeholders, all working collectively to ensure the normal pricing and supply of saline solution.
