Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader on Wednesday addressed the recent rumours of a leadership crisis in the party on returning to Dhaka following his four-day visit to India.
He said the rumours of the “Debor-Bhabi” conflict were being spread by certain quarters in order to make the Jatiya Party seem weak.
Regarding the visit to India, the JaPa chief said: “India wants our cooperation for stability in Bangladesh and to ensure a violence-free environment before and after the next national parliamentary election.”
He was speaking at a press conference at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport soon after landing in Dhaka last evening. GM Quader had gone to Delhi at the invitation of high officials of the Indian government.
GM Quader, who arrived in Dhaka at around 7pm, was welcomed by hundreds of leaders and activists of JaPa, including its Secretary General Mujibul Hoque Chunnu, at the airport.
In response to a question, he said: “In general, we discussed several national and political issues, and the Indian side thinks that JaPa is a very promising political party in Bangladesh. They want to see a timely election in Bangladesh, and do not want any type of violence before or after the polls.”
He added that he had met several influential Indian leaders, but the details would be disclosed later.
When asked about the JaPa leadership conflict, GM Quader said: “Raushan Ershad is like a mother to me, as she is my elder brother’s wife. I do not have any division or difference with her. Some people are trying to misrepresent my sister-in-law’s signature and statement to make the Jatiya party seem weak. They want to tarnish the image of the party and make it seem divided.”
He further said that he believes Raushan Ershad played no part in the rumours of her taking over the JaPa chairmanship, and called for organizational action against those who had misrepresented her statement.
During the visit to India, GM Quader was scheduled to hold meetings with leaders of the ruling party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Party Presidium member and wife of GM Quader Sherifa Quader, and Masroor Mawla, International Affairs Secretary to the Party chairman, accompanied him.
