A Chhatra Dal leader from Jagannath University was reportedly assaulted by Chhatra League activists after finishing his midterm examination on Tuesday afternoon.
The injured leader is Jagannath University Chhatra Dal Co-Organizing Secretary Abu Hena Mursalin.
Eyewitnesses said some students beat up Mursalin with bamboo sticks in the Shanto Chattar area of the campus in the afternoon.
Those accused of thrashing him are Zahidul Islam Hasan from the mathematics department, Arafat from the accounting and information department, along with some others. All of them are followers of JnU Chhatra League General Secretary SM Akhter Hossain.
Proctor Prof Dr Mostofa Kamal said: "After receiving information about the incident, I immediately sent the assistant proctor to the spot. The student was then handed over to the police to verify if there was a case against him. Since no case was found, we suggested his release."
"On our campus, nobody should be subjected to beatings for political reasons. This campus belongs to everyone, and we will conduct a thorough investigation."
SI Hasan Matbor of Sadarghat police outpost said: "The university's proctor handed over the student into police custody."
JnU Chhatra League General Secretary SM Akter Hossain said: "The university administration will take action if any beating or attacks occur on campus."
He clarified Chhatra League will not take any responsibility for internal conflicts among students.
JnU Chhatra Dal President Asaduzzaman Aslam said: "One of our committee's co-organizing secretaries was injured by some Chhatra League activists. This has happened before – students were beaten up during exams. The university should have caught the attackers and turned them over to the police. But they did not do that; instead, they broke the rules by handing the injured student over to the police. We will take legal action against those who attacked the Chhatra Dal leader."
Social Work Department Chairman Prof Dr Razina Sultana said: "Mursalin was assaulted after finishing his midterm exam. I have already reached out to the university proctor and requested that they punish the attackers in accordance with university regulations."
