Though the situation was calm immediately after the death of Jamaat leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee, his supporters started gathering gradually and the situation became fearful and chaotic after 4am on Tuesday, according to authorities of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU)
On that day, seven public and private vehicles including an ambulance and hospital infrastructure were damaged, according to a press release signed by Professor Dr Mohammad Hafizur Rahman, registrar of BSMMU, on Thursday.
BSMMU said Jamaat supporters created obstacles and disruptions in providing services to patients. Gradually they became more violent and damaged the infrastructure of the hospital. They broke the wall of gate No two of the hospital, damaged the boundary wall of a liquid oxygen tank, broke the pipelines of BrachyTherapy and E-Block, uprooted the garden grill, broke the bricks in front of the generator building and threw them at the members of law enforcement.
The situation was so frightening that patients, doctors, nurses, officers and employees who provide the services started screaming in panic. Many doctors, nurses and hospital patients fell ill. In this situation, law enforcement agencies dispersed them and normalized the hospital environment by taking necessary measures for the safety of government property and life.
On Sunday, Delawar Hossain Sayedee, 83, was admitted to BSMMU. While receiving treatment, Sayedee passed away at 8:40pm on Monday, under the care of BSMMU Cardiology Department Chairman Professor Chowdhury Meshkat Ahmed.
Jamaat-Shibir leaders and activists on Tuesday morning carried out attacks and vandalism at BSMMU and Shahbagh intersection around the ambulance carrying Jamaat-e-Islami leader and convicted war criminal Delawar Hossain Sayedee.
