After the death of convicted war criminal and Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on Monday night, his followers have spread various rumors and criticism on social media centring the death.
They also alleged the negligence of BSMMU doctors behind his death.
Amid this, the BSMMU authorities have come up with their explanation of the treatment provided to Sayedee.
An explanation was sent to the media in a press release signed by the university's registrar Professor Dr Mohammad Hafizur Rahman on Wednesday afternoon.
BSMMU’s explanation
It has been mentioned in the release that the 84-year-old patient Delwar Hossain Sayedee was brought by the Kashimpur Jail authorities to the emergency department of BSMMU at 10:30pm on Sunday. From the time of his admission to the hospital, all the subsequent treatments were completed following international practices.
In his treatment, all the specialist professors of the hospital properly performed their professional duties.
It also said that the next day on Monday, at 6:45pm, he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. Treatment continued as per his advanced cardiac life support protocol. But unfortunately he died at 8:45pm on the same day.
“His son Masood Sayedee is well aware of the course of the disease and its treatment,” said the release.
BSMMU canceled briefing in the morning
Earliker in the day, BSMMU authorities postponed their briefing on the late Jamaat leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee’s treatment due to security concerns.
The briefing was scheduled to be held on Wednesday morning.
However, in the morning, BSMMU announced that the briefing had been postponed due to unavoidable reasons.
General diary filed by BSMMU doctor
BSMMU Cardiology Department’s Prof Dr SM Mustafa Zaman earlier lodged a general diary at Dhanmondi police station after receiving threats over Sayedee’s death at the hospital.
He said: "We treat everyone equally, regardless of religion, caste, or political affiliation. This applied to him (Sayedee) as well. We did give him the wrong treatment."
"However, baseless rumours targeting me as a murderer have been circulated. Many have even issued death threats," he added.
Home Minister’s statement over Jamaat’s threat to doctor
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said that the threat to kill the doctor is a reflection of Jamaat's terrorist attitude.
“BSMMU Doctor SM Mustafa Zaman came to me on Tuesday night. He explained everything. He served as a physician and gave treatment to Sayedee. Still threatening to kill him is a matter of surprise.”
He said these things to reporters after a National Mourning Day program at the North South University campus on Wednesday.
Jamaat-Shibir leaders and activists on Tuesday morning carried out attack and vandalism at BSMMU and Shahbagh intersection around the ambulance carrying Jamaat-e-Islami leader and convicted war criminal Delawar Hossain Sayedee.
Besides, violence was also reported in several other districts.
On Sunday, Delawar Hossain Sayedee, 83, was admitted to BSMMU. While receiving treatment, Sayedee passed away at 8:40pm on Monday, under the care of BSMMU Cardiology Department Chairman Professor Chowdhury Meshkat Ahmed.
