Protests over an attack on female footballers in Khulna continued Thursday as three organisations formed a human chain in front of Khulna Press Club.
They demanded justice for the victims and exemplary punishment of the attackers.
Earlier, We Can and Naripokkho, a membership-based women’s rights organisation, demanded fair investigation and justice into the attack.
Manusher Jonno Foundation, another rights group, has also expressed deep concern over the incident.
Meanwhile, three accused in a case filed over the attack were released on bail on Tuesday.
The trio Salauddin, 22, Nupur Khatun, 22, and Ronji Begum, 40, were brought before a Khulna court after their arrest in the case filed by one of the victims Sadia Nasrin. Another accused, Nur Alom, is currently in police custody.
According to the case statement, some local people have long been harassing under-17 footballer Sadia Nasrin for playing football. On July 27, Nupur Khatun captured images of football player Sadia Nasreen while she was playing and sent the pictures to Sadia’s family and relatives with obscene comments.
When Sadia and her family along with footballers Mangali Bagchi, Hajera Khatun and Jui protested at Nupur’s actions visiting her house at Tentultala village of Khulna’s Baitaghata Upazila on July 29 evening, Nupur and her family attacked them with iron rods, leaving them injured.
Sadia said the accused have been threatening her and alleged negligence by the police in arresting them.
Showkat Kabir, officer-in-charge of Batiakhata police station, said they managed to arrest one of the accused, Nur Alom, in the case while three others secured bail. He said that they were working on the case as a separate general diary has been lodged by Sadia at the police station.
