At least 11 cases have been filed at seven police stations under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police against 469 BNP leaders and activists over clashes that unfolded on Saturday around the party's sit-in program at major entry points of the city.
One case each was filed at Bangshal, Sutrapur, Kadamtoli and Airport police stations, two at Jatrabari and Uttara West police stations, and three at Uttara East police station.
DMP Deputy Police Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Farooq Hossain on Sunday said: "Police are the plaintiffs in nine cases ordinary citizens in two."
The cases were filed over clashes, vandalism and arsons during the sit-ins on Saturday, he added.
He said the BNP organized an illegal program on Saturday ignoring the DMP's disapproval.
“They vandalized buses and blasted crude bombs, vandalized police cars, attacked police officers, and obstructed them from performing duties,” he said.
The BNP's sit-in program at key entry points of Dhaka was marred by clashes and violence on Saturday, leaving an unspecified number of people injured.
Several vehicles were torched in different areas, including Matuail and Shyamoli, during the clashes between BNP activists and police.
Police also beat up BNP Standing Committee Member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, leaving him injured. Law enforcers later picked him up from the spot, reports UNB.
Police also picked up BNP Dhaka North Convener Amanullah Aman from Gabtoli bus station around noon as he along with BNP activists tried to stage a sit-in there.
Later, they were released.
Opposition leaders and activists also locked in clashes with police in Dholaikhal, Uttara, Rayerbag and Gabtoli when they took positions there observing their scheduled program.
