Election Commission asks parties to get ready for national polls

  • No scope to go outside constitution
  • Polls schedule to be announced in time

The Election Commission (EC) has asked parties that are interested to participate in the 12th parliamentary polls to get ready.

Election Commissioner Anisur Rahman said: “The Election Commission is ready to hold the 12th parliamentary election as per the roadmap. Those who are interested to participate in the elections should take preparations from now.”

He made the comments while talking to reporters on Tuesday. 

The election commissioner said the national polls' schedule will be announced in due course. “As the election time approaches, we will be under pressure, as will the political parties.”

He also noted that the Election Commission hopes that all parties would attend the national polls, adding there was no scope to go beyond the constitution. 

Election Commissioner Anisur Rahman said that the election schedule has not been discussed yet, adding that the plan would be announced 45 days in advance, either in the first week of January or the last week of December.

Regarding the registration of new parties, the election commissioner said: "We have given time till July 26 (Wednesday) to raise objections to the parties that have been registered.”

Regarding Gono Odhikar Parishad's attempt to lay siege to the Election Commission, Anisur Rahman said the party has the right do to so.
