Workers at a garments factory in Gazipur have taken to the streets in protest of layoffs by the factory authorities.
As many as 85 Incredible Fashion Limited workers found that they were laid off through a notice on the gate of the factory in the Kaliakair’s Matikata area on Wednesday morning. They immediately took to the streets outside the factory.
According to Industries police Inspector Farhad Abbas, the closure of two sections of the factory stirred the protests.
The workers threw bricks at the police who went to bring the situation under control, he said, adding that police in turn fired 19 tear gas shells at them.
According to a worker, the factory authorities fired a floor in-charge recently without valid cause and they had been protesting the lay-off peacefully. Subsequently, the factory authorities fired the workers saying that the two sewing sections were unable to function properly owing to workers’ protests.
The sections are being closed off in keeping with section 13 (1) of the Labour Act 2006, the notice read.
Incredible Fashion Limited Manager Badruzzaman said they were trying to sort the situation out through negotiations.
