RAB detains 2 Hindu youths for spreading rumour on social media

Update : 28 Oct 2021, 03:54 PM

In an attempt to contain cybercrimes, elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has detained two youths in Dhaka and Khulna on charges of fueling communal attacks by sharing provocative information and fake photos on Facebook.

One of them, Uttam Majumder, 31, a private jobholder, was held from Lobonchara area of Khulna on Wednesday night. RAB also seized his phone.

RAB-6 Commander Lt Col Mostaq Ahmed claimed that Uttam had been using his Facebook profile to instigate the Hindus in an aim to harm communal harmony.

The screenshots of his posts include false claims of rape in Hajiganj of Chandpur, and criticising the administration and the law enforcers for their inaction to prevent the attacks.

The other youth, Ashishi Mallik, 30, was detained from Dhaka’s Banani on Tuesday evening. He opened a Facebook page on October 16 and posted various provocative posts. He had some like-minded people to work as admins, RAB said.

From the page, Ashish shared photos and videos of incidents took place in neighbouring countries to create fear in the minds of the people. He also used hashtags as part of a conspiracy to establish the country as a communal state, claims RAB.

Earlier, RAB picked up Ruma Sarker, an assistant professor of Begum Badrunnesa Government Girls’ College, from her Baily Road residence on October 20.

She was accused of sharing a video of a murder with wrong captions, describing it to be the mob attack on Jatan Kumar Saha of Noakhali.

The next day, an Islamic preacher from Keraniganj was held by a team of Crime Investigation Department (cyber monitoring cell) for comments that allegedly incited temple attacks over the desecration of the Holy Quran in Comilla.

Maulana Abdur Rahim Biplobi, 39, hailing from Dholaipar, Dhaka, at a waz mahfil in Dhaka on October 13 threatened that if the perpetrators who kept the holy Quran with a Hindu idol had not been arrested by October 14, an unruly protest would start from each mosque the next day after Jumma prayer.

He also said: “No Puja Mandap will be spared in Bangladesh.”
