Ranga: I guess PM isn’t aware of fuel oil price hike

Bus owners claim their cost will go up by 52 poisha per kilometre, says the JaPa leader

Jatiya Party leader and Chief Whip of the opposition in parliament Moshiar Rahman Ranga has claimed that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, now in the UK attending the COP26, is not aware of the sudden price hike in diesel price.

“Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) did not show the minimum decency to discuss the matter of increasing the price of diesel and kerosene with us,” said Ranga, also the central president of the Motor Owners' Association.

He made the remarks to reporters while visiting Maulana Keramat Ali's shrine in Munshipara area of Rangpur city on Saturday afternoon.

Ranga said the ordinary owners had called the strike, not the Motor Owners’ Association.

On Wednesday, the government increased diesel and kerosene prices by Tk15 per litre -- from Tk65 to Tk80 -- in order to keep them in line with rising fuel prices in the global market.

The JaPa leader said that the owners had been claiming that their cost would go up by 52 poisha per kolimetre due to the rise in diesel price. Moreover, as the toll for Jamuna Bridge has been increased, the cost of the bus owners would not be less than Tk1,000.

He lamented that some bus owners, workers and people from different organizations collect toll from the buses every day, causing the ordinary bus owners to suffer.

“I’ve asked them to wait till the prime minister returns to country. But if we put more pressure, we will lose leadership,” he told reporters.

Meanwhile, from a press conference on Saturday, the Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity said that if the price of fuel oil went up by Tk15, the transport owners should not increase the fare by more than 15 paisa.

The JaPa leader said that the rise in diesel price would have an impact on the prices of all commodities including the daily necessities.

“Farmers need to buy diesel for irrigation. Poor people and small shop owners buy kerosene to cook. These people will be harmed,” he added.

Criticizing the decision to increase the toll for the Jamuna Bridge by Tk200, Ranga said that the contractors had already earned three times the construction cost of the bridge. “Now increasing the toll again is inhuman.”

Jatiya Party district unit Secretary Abdur Razzak, party leader Nazimuzzaman and other top leaders and activists were present with the opposition chief whip.
