Supreme Court lawyer Mahmudul Hasan filed the writ, naming the secretaries of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock and the Ministry of Commerce, as well as the chairman of TCB, as defendants.
According to the writ petition, beef is one of the staple foods of the majority of people in Bangladesh.
However, the prices of beef in the market have increased too much and now being sold at the rate of Tk750 to 850 per kg. Beef has already gone beyond the affordability of the lower and lower-middle class people, it said.
According to the import policy 2021-24, beef is an importable product. Additionally, according to section 12 of The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh Order 1972, it is the legal duty of TCB to ensure the supply of products to the market by ensuring the supply of products to the market and keeping the market price affordable.
However, TCB failed to fulfill its legal duty by not importing live cows and beef from abroad, the writ petition said.
