Deaths from poisoning: Grieving parents demand scrutiny of imported pesticides

‘It is excruciating to watch your child die in front of your eyes’

The death of the two siblings, allegedly from pesticide poisoning, has sparked urgent calls from grieving parents and guardians for the government to examine how such harmful chemicals are being imported into the country.

"I will never see my children again. But I want to know from the government how this kind of chemical came into the country. I do not want any other child's parents to face such a situation. It is excruciating to watch your child die in front of your eyes," Mobarak Hossain, late Zahin and Zayan's father said on Friday at a human chain formed in front of the Delhi Public School (DPS) in Dhaka's Uttara.

Many anguished parents demanded justice at the human chain, organized by Zahin-Zayan Memorial Foundation.

"I demand a thorough investigation and justice for this incident. I don't want any other parent to find themselves in this situation. If it were a normal pesticide, this major incident would not have happened. I would urge the government to scrutinize whether there was any fault in the import process," said Arifur Rahman, another parent, whose child studied in the same grade as Zahin.

"I want this case to be considered as a murder case. Two suspects have been arrested and I want them to face justice for this incident," said another parent, Jaman.

According to police and family sources, some pest control company employees went to the family's house in Dhaka's Bashundhara residential area on June 2.

The family entered the house some 15 hours after the service was completed.

However, all of the family members allegedly fell sick from the effects of the spray the company used.

Shahir Mobarrat Zayan, 9, and Shayan Mobarrat Zahin, 15, died on June 4 while undergoing treatment at the ICU of Dhaka's Evercare Hospital.

In this case, the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Lalbagh Division arrested Ashrafuzzaman, chairman of the pest control service institution DCS Organisation Ltd, and its managing director Forhadul Amin, after filing a case at the Vatara police station in the capital.

Later, they were sent to a three-day remand by the court.
