Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin said that to reduce the visible threats to human health, initiatives should be taken to increase the use of sustainable alternatives to plastic and eco-friendly products.
He said this while addressing the closing and prize distribution ceremony on the occasion of World Environment Day 2023 celebrated with the slogan “Beat Plastic Pollution” at the Department of Environment on Wednesday.
Every citizen including producers and exporters of plastic products, various market associations, manufacturers of alternative products to polythene and environmental organizations should work responsibly in this regard.
The minister said that everyone in the country should work unitedly to protect and develop the environment and prevent environmental pollution as well as create a country free from the harmful effects of plastic.
Dhaka TribuneThe environment minister said that the government is working tirelessly to manage all types of plastic and polythene waste. The action plan formulated in this regard has undertaken initiatives to recycle 50% of plastic waste by 2025.
Also, an action plan has been adopted to reduce plastic waste by 30% by 2030. A target of using 90% single-use plastic by 2026 and a 50% reduction in the use of virgin materials in plastic production by 2030 has been set.
Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Additional Secretary (Administration) Iqbal Abdullah Harun was present as a special guest in the closing ceremony led by Director General of Environment Directorate Dr Abdul Hamid. Additional Director General of the Environment Department Kazi Abu Taher also spoke at the event.
